The Win-Points Scoring System is adapted from scoring principles used in Multiple Round Robin Match Racing and modified for Team Racing. Win-Points provides an alternative method of ranking teams where teams have raced each other different numbers of times and is fully supported within the kSail Events Portal.
Application
When included as a Sailing Instruction, Win-Points applies when all teams have raced all other teams at least once, but some matches between teams have been sailed more than others, it does not apply when all teams have sailed each other the same number of times (eg. Round Robins are completed)
The Key Principle
There is one win-point available between any two teams, regardless of how many times those teams race each other.
- If two teams race once, the winner receives one win-point.
- If two teams race twice, each race win is worth half a win-point.
- If two teams race three times, each race win is worth one-third of a win-point.
The value of a match, to a teams ranking, herefore remains constant regardless of the number of times the match has been completed.
Worked Example
Consider a four-team event where a second round robin has started but not been completed, the example below demonstrates how win-points are calculated (and can be displayed).

Win-Points are allocated between pairings of teams. Each pairing contributes a total of one win-point regardless of the number of races sailed between those teams.
In the above example:
- Team A and Team B have only raced once. Team A won the race and therefore receives 1 win-point.
- Team A and Team C have raced twice. Each team won one race and therefore each receives ½ win-point.
- Team C and Team D have raced twice. Each team won one race and therefore each receives ½ win-point.
- Team A and Team D have raced twice. Team A won both races and therefore recieves ½ win-point for each win, totalling 1 win-point
The total number of win-points available between any two teams remains constant regardless of the number of times they race each other.
Scoring and Tie Breaks
- If all teams have raced all other teams the same number of times, teams are ranked using wins (standard Team Racing scoring).
- If all teams have raced all other teams at least once, but not the same number of times, teams are ranked on total Win-Points scored.
- Tie breaks for Win-Points use the standard Team Racing tie-breaks as defined in RRS D4.4.
Benefits of Win-Points
The Win-Points system means a ranking can include every race completed within a stage, even where teams have not all raced each other the same number of times. As a result, every race sailed continues to contribute towards the final ranking.
