Spreader End Sail Protection

Spreader End Sail Protection

Team Racing Boats will generate a lot of wear on the mainsail from the Spreader Ends. You can quickly, easily and cheaply reduce the damage caused by spreader ends to your mainsails by putting some padding or protection around the end of the spreaders.

Method 1 - Squash Balls
Method 2 - Pipe Lagging
Method 3 - Spreader Caps

Carefully cut a cross in an old squash ball before placing over the spreader end and shroud; secure in place with electrical tape.

Cut a short piece of 15mm foam pipe lagging. This can be secured vertically over the spreader end and shroud with electrical tape.
Purchase a purpose made PVC spreader boot. These are often expensive and designed more for keelboats than dinghies.

Spreader Patches

Applying spreader patches to your mainsail(s) before any holes develop from spreader wear is a sensible choice. It is often better to do this when the sails have had a some use such that it is clear where patches should be applied.
Should small holes have developed in the sail before patches are applied, the patches themselves are often enough to serve as a permanant repair. If larger holes are present and you are unsure whether a patch is sufficient, you may be advised to discuss repair options with us or your local sail repairer.
Spreader patches can be made from Heavy Duty Sail Repair Tapes:
  1. White - 50mm x 2m
  2. White - 100mm x 2m
  3. Coloured (Draft Tape) (Various Sizes)
