It is
expected that all competitors show due care and attention to the boats that are
provided for their use during events. However, when damage occurs, the
sailor(s) at fault will pay the cost of the damage up to the level as set out
in the Notice of Race for the event.
Some events
provide an effective system of future security, for example where the
Organising Authority is member driven or has sufficient financial backing.
However, this is not appropriate for most events run by university clubs or where
there is minimal historical or future relationship likely between organisations
or sailors.
In the post
cheque book world, the kSail Online Damage Deposit Service aims to
provide a way for event organisers to hold a deposit for any damage caused
without being exposed to significant financial risk themselves and in a way
that doesn’t ask sailors to breach their own financial security by losing
control of their own credit/debit card.
How does the service work?
Teams
purchase a damage deposit for a particular event via the website at
https://entries.ksail.co.uk/. This pre-authorises the payment method, checking with the
provider that there is sufficient funds to make a future payment and
temporarily placing a hold on those funds for up to seven days. It does not
process a payment. This is like when a bar or restaurant takes a card profile
to set up a tab.
This can be
done from midday of the day before the event through to registration at the
event. The event organiser will be provided with the details of teams which
have used the service and therefore meet the event Damage Deposit requirements.
Post event,
teams not responsible for any damage will have the card hold released as soon
as the Organising Authority notify kSail or within 7 days of the initial
transaction.
Should a
team be deemed responsible for damage then the process is as follows:
- The
Organising Authority will inform the team of the level of payment that is
required.
- On
or before the Alternative Payment Deadline provided on the website, the team
can pay the Organising Authority directly in which instance the hold on the
card will be released.
- If
the payment is not made directly to the Organising Authority by this deadline
then the card will be charged.
- The
amount of the pre-authorisation includes the damage deposit and an
administrative fee.
- If no charge
is made, there is no cost to either the card holder or payment processor.
Additional Notes
kSail provides this Service as an Agent between the Organising Authority and the Boat, Competitor or Team that has made the entry to the event.
The service requires a card used which is valid and has sufficient available funds to cover the damage deposit and administration fee.
Some card suppliers may show funds as being withdrawn rather than being held by the pre-authorisation. This is an unfortunate peculiarity of the terms of service of these card suppliers and not something that this service can control.
